This is one of Perth Mint's 5 oz gold proof issues in their long-running kangaroo series — a program that has continued largely uninterrupted since 1987. What makes the 2023 date unusual is its designation under Elizabeth II's sixth portrait, a effigy by sculptor Jody Clark introduced in 2015 and now frozen in time: Elizabeth II died in September 2022, making this among the final Australian coinage issues to bear her likeness before the transition to Charles III.
Perth Mint proofs at this weight are struck to order with strict mintage limits, and unsold allocations are rarely carried forward.
