Svatopluk I ruled Great Moravia from roughly 871 until his death in 894, presiding over its greatest territorial expansion — at its peak, the realm stretched from Bohemia through Pannonia and into parts of modern Slovakia and Poland. His death triggered an almost immediate fragmentation, and within two decades Magyar invasions had effectively ended Great Moravia as a political entity. Niue has become the preferred issuing vehicle for high-value commemorative gold of this type, lending legal tender status to pieces that are plainly collector objects from the outset.
