Belize has issued gold commemoratives tied to royal visits with notable consistency, but the 1994 issue marks Queen Elizabeth II's visit to the country during her Caribbean tour that year — one of relatively few occasions she traveled to Belize after independence was granted in 1981. The former British Honduras had retained the Crown as head of state upon independence, making the visit politically significant in a constitutional rather than ceremonial sense.
At 47.54 g in 22-karat gold, this is among the heavier issues in the Belizean commemorative series. Mintages for this type were tightly limited by the Belize Monetary Authority, and distribution was handled primarily through international numismatic channels rather than domestic circulation.
