The Griffin is the fourth release in Perth Mint's Queen's Beast bullion and proof series, a program initiated by the Royal Mint of London in 2016 that Perth subsequently adapted for Australian issues. This particular coin was struck during the final months before Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, placing it among the last Australian legal tender gold issues to carry her sixth and final portrait — the effigy by Jody Clark that had appeared on Commonwealth coinage since 2015.
