Anmerkungen

Hawaii's 1879 certificates of deposit were issued under the reign of King Kalākaua, who had just taken the throne following a contested election in 1874 — one ultimately decided by the Hawaiian legislature under significant American commercial pressure. The Department of Finance issued these instruments primarily to manage government debt obligations rather than facilitate everyday commerce, which is why surviving examples show little evidence of hand-to-hand circulation.

American Bank Note Company's New York facility printed the full series. ABNCo held a near-monopoly on prestige government printing contracts across the Pacific and Latin America during this period, and the Hawaiian certificates follow the same high-intaglio standard applied to their contemporaneous South American government work.

Pick lists only five types for the Hawaiian Islands across the entire nineteenth century — this $500 denomination is among the highest face values in that thin catalogue.
