Reverse description A finely detailed depiction of the Buddha seated in the lotus position upon a lotus flower throne occupies the central field, shown in a meditative posture with the right hand raised in the vitarka mudra (teaching gesture) and the left hand resting in the lap. A circular halo frames the head of the figure. Four Chinese characters appear in the upper field reading 如來佛祖 (Rulai Fozu, meaning 'Tathagata Buddha'), while two further two-character inscriptions 佛光 and 普照 flank the figure in the middle field. The gold fineness marking Au. 999.9 is inscribed to the lower left, and the denomination $500 appears in the exergue.
