Obverse description Black intaglio engraving on a coloured guilloche underprint, with an oval portrait vignette at left enclosing a three-quarter view of Sir John A. Macdonald. The centre is dominated by a large numeral 500 within an ornate guilloche surround flanked by maple leaf devices, with the denomination FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS in letterpress below. The upper margin carries the issuer legend THE BANK OF CANADA / WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND, with OTTAWA / ISSUE OF 1935 at top, and facsimile signatures of the Deputy Governor and Governor running across the lower centre.
