Obverse description	The national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe occupies the central field, depicting two African grey parrots facing each other with wings spread, flanking a shield charged with a palm tree above a black star. Scrolls beneath the shield bear the national motto inscribed on three ribbons. The circumferential legend reads 'REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE' along the upper and lower periphery, following the heptagonal coin format. The date 1997 is prominently placed in the lower field beneath the coat of arms.
