The General Women's Union was established by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1975 to consolidate women's societies across the emirates under a federal body — a deliberate nation-building move in a state less than four years old. This coin marks the organization's twentieth anniversary, placing its issue squarely in the mid-1990s push by Abu Dhabi to codify UAE federal institutions through commemorative gold.
Struck at 22-carat fineness, the series to which this belongs (Fr#9) had extremely limited mintage, as was standard for UAE gold commemoratives of the period targeting collector markets rather than circulation.
