500 Dinara Olympics - Downhill Skiing

Bosnia and Herzegovina issued this coin in 1993 while the country was actively under siege — Sarajevo was in the middle of the longest blockade of a capital city in modern warfare. The 1984 Winter Olympics had been held in Sarajevo less than a decade earlier, and the issuing of commemorative Olympic coinage amid active conflict was as much a political statement of sovereign continuity as it was a numismatic exercise.

The infrastructure used for those 1984 games — including the Trebević bobsled track and ski facilities on Jahorina — was being shelled at the time of striking.
