By 1990, Yugoslav inflation was accelerating toward catastrophe — the 500 Dinar note was already losing practical value faster than the ink dried. Within months, the Ante Marković government's January 1990 monetary reform had redenominated the currency at 10,000 old Dinara to 1 new Dinar, rendering the entire preceding series obsolete almost immediately. This note belongs to that brief, chaotic window before redenomination took hold.
ZIN in Belgrade handled the full production run in-house, with engraving split between Hrvanović on the obverse and Obradović and Medecijan on the reverse — an unusual division for a single-denomination issue.
