Struck to commemorate Nāṣer al-Dīn Shāh's third and final European tour in 1889–1890, this issue belongs to a small category of Qājār coins produced for diplomatic and ceremonial purposes rather than general circulation. The shah's European travels were politically loaded affairs — each trip generated fresh concessions to foreign powers, and the third tour culminated in the infamous 1890 tobacco concession to a British company, which triggered the first mass popular protest movement in modern Iranian history and was ultimately reversed under clerical pressure.
