Macedonia's 1996 issue came during the country's early years of international recognition — a period when the bank was still working to establish credible, modern currency infrastructure after independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Giesecke & Devrient handled a substantial portion of the new Denar series, which gave the notes a consistency of production quality unusual for a newly sovereign issuer of this size.
The 500 Denar was the highest denomination in circulation at this point. Pick 17 is not especially scarce, but the 1996 date is the only year of issue for this denomination in this format before the series was eventually revised.
