The Gambia marked its independence from Britain on February 18, 1965, having been one of the smallest and most economically marginal colonies on the continent — a narrow strip of territory defined almost entirely by the Gambia River, surrounded on three sides by Senegal. The 50th anniversary in 2015 prompted a wave of official commemorative issues, of which this is one.
Gold-plated silver commemoratives of this type were produced primarily for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation. KM#106 sees limited secondary market activity.
