The Ibero-American series was a multinational commemorative program launched in 1991 to coincide with the quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, with mints across Spain, Portugal, and Latin America each issuing coordinated silver pieces under a shared thematic framework. Brazil's participation was handled by the Casa da Moeda do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro, one of the oldest operating mints in the Americas, established originally by royal decree in 1694.
The 1991 series focused on pre-Columbian and colonial nautical themes, tying Brazil's entry to the broader Encuentro de Dos Mundos commemorations running across the decade toward 1992.
