Uzbekistan's coupon issues of 1992–1993 were transitional instruments, introduced as the country moved away from Soviet ruble dependency before a permanent national currency could be established. These coupons circulated alongside — and eventually displaced — the ruble in retail transactions, though they were never intended as a long-term solution.
The quarterly denomination structure was unusual: rather than fixed face values, coupons were issued by quarter of use, tying validity to a calendar period in an attempt to curb hoarding during a stretch of severe inflation. The 3rd quarter 1993 coupons coincided with the months immediately preceding the introduction of the som in July 1994.
