Uzbekistan's first post-independence issues were denominated in "coupons" rather than som, a deliberate transitional measure while the country remained technically within the ruble zone. The coupon system was never intended as permanent currency — it was an administrative stopgap, and the nomenclature reflects that uncertainty about what, exactly, this new state would use as money.

The sole listed security feature — an official stamp — points to how improvised these early issues were. Coupons of this series are known to have been produced under considerable time pressure in 1992.
