Nicaragua's 500 Córdobas note from this series was part of a broader redesign program undertaken by the Banco Central in the early 2010s, as the country moved to modernize its currency security infrastructure following years of counterfeiting pressure on higher denominations. The print run of just over 12 million is modest by regional standards — neighboring countries with comparable economies routinely issue two to three times that volume for equivalent denominations — suggesting either tight budgetary controls or a shorter projected circulation cycle.
The optically variable ink was a meaningful upgrade for Nicaragua specifically; earlier 500-córdoba issues had relied on comparatively basic security features that local counterfeiters had learned to replicate.
