Additional information

Nicaragua's 1987 coinage was struck amid a collapsing monetary system. The Córdoba had been devastated by hyperinflation driven by the Contra war, U.S. trade embargo, and chronic budget deficits under the Sandinista government — by 1988, inflation would exceed 30,000 percent annually. Issuing aluminium coins denominated at 500 Córdobas was a stopgap measure that fooled no one; the entire denomination structure was effectively worthless within months of striking.

A full monetary reform followed in 1988, replacing the Córdoba at a rate of 1,000 to one.
