Robinson Crusoe Island — officially renamed from Más a Tierra by Chile in 1966 specifically to boost tourism — sits in the Juan Fernández Archipelago some 670 km off the Chilean coast and was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977. The island lent its name to Defoe's 1719 novel because the Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was marooned there from 1704 to 1709, though Defoe transplanted the fictional setting to the Caribbean.
