| Obverse description | Bimetallic coin with a nickel brass outer ring and copper-nickel centre. The large denomination numeral '500' occupies the centre of the inner disc in bold relief, with the inscription 'COLONES' below and 'BANCO CENTRAL DE COSTA RICA' arching across the upper portion of the centre. A reeded decorative band separates the lower field, where a latent image security feature bearing '500CR' is visible.
