Obverse description The obverse is printed predominantly in red and pink tones on a light guilloche underprint. A three-quarter portrait vignette of Manuel María Gutiérrez occupies the right half of the note, flanked by ornate lathe-work rosettes and scrollwork. The upper left carries the date and place of issue reading 'San José, Costa Rica' alongside the denomination numeral '500', while the lower margin bears the issuer legend 'BANCO CENTRAL DE COSTA RICA' in intaglio letterpress; two signature lines with printed titles 'PRESIDENTE EJECUTIVO' and 'GERENTE' appear below the portrait, and a BCCR anniversary overprint stamp is visible to the right.

Reverse description The reverse is rendered in deep brown and red intaglio on a pale guilloche ground. A detailed architectural vignette of the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica occupies the central field, captioned 'TEATRO NACIONAL DE COSTA RICA' below the building. To the left, a large decorative medallion with a lion-mask motif and radiating sunburst pattern balances the composition, while ornamental lathe-work panels fill the margins. The issuer name 'BANCO CENTRAL DE COSTA RICA' runs along the lower border, and the denomination '500' appears in numeral form at the lower right.
