J.A. Moisan, operating out of Québec City's Lower Town, is generally recognized as the oldest grocery store in North America, having traded continuously from the same address on rue Saint-Jean since 1871. This 500-cent note is a store scrip issued in 2010 — a promotional or loyalty instrument rather than a monetary necessity, reviving a 19th-century merchant tradition for modern commercial purposes. Printed by Deschamps Impression, a Québec house with roots going back to 1926, the physical production is entirely local.
Scrip of this kind has no legal tender status and its redeemability is entirely at the issuer's discretion.
