The Szechuan-Shensi Soviet was established in late 1932 after Communist forces under Xu Xiangqian pushed into the Sichuan-Shaanxi border region, creating one of the largest soviet base areas in China at its peak — covering a population estimated at three million. This 500-cash denomination reflects the practical monetary demands of administering that territory: the base area operated its own financial system, including a workers' and peasants' bank, specifically to break dependence on Nationalist currency and local warlord scrip.
The region was abandoned during the 1935 forced evacuation that merged into the broader Long March narrative, making the entire coinage series a product of a remarkably compressed three-year window.
