Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, Venezuela was among dozens of countries that produced commemorative silver pieces for the occasion — a globally coordinated program that generated significant criticism for its commercial rather than diplomatic character. The Banco Central de Venezuela had already been managing chronic bolivar depreciation throughout the early 1990s, and hard-currency silver commemoratives of this kind were effectively priced out of domestic circulation from the moment of issue.
