The Banco Central de Venezuela was established only in 1940, and the P#37 series reflects the institution's early consolidation of Venezuela's note-issuing authority — previously scattered across commercial banks. The 500 Bolívares denomination was the highest in circulation for much of this period, serving an economy transformed by petroleum revenue but still dependent on imported printing expertise.
The American Bank Note Company held Venezuela's contracts across multiple series during these decades. The 24-year date span of P#37 suggests successive printings with incremental changes — signature combinations are the primary variable distinguishing issues within the type, and collectors tracking the full run must work through at least a dozen known signature pairs.
