Obverse description The national coat of arms of Panama occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield surmounted by a harpy eagle with wings displayed; the shield quarters contain crossed swords and rifle, an open isthmus between two oceans, a cornucopia, and a winged wheel, with the motto PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO on a banner. The surrounding legend reads REPUBLICA DE PANAMA, separated by a row of small stars at the top of the coin. The denomination 500 BALBOAS appears prominently at the bottom, with the fineness inscription 500/1000 ORO FINO inscribed in the lower field. The mintmark FM for the Franklin Mint appears below the coat of arms. The scalloped coin shape follows the seven-notched contour throughout.
