Rama IX — Bhumibol Adulyadej — died on 13 October 2016 after a 70-year reign, the longest of any monarch in Thai history. This note was part of a commemorative issue authorized by the Bank of Thailand specifically to mark his passing, distinct from the standard circulation series that had carried his portrait for decades. The decision to issue a dedicated posthumous note reflected the extraordinary depth of public mourning in Thailand; the country observed a one-year period of mourning during which black dress became near-universal.
Printed at the Bank of Thailand's own facility in Bangkok, which has produced Thai currency in-house since 1969.
