500 Angolares

Banco de Angola's 500 Angolares of 1927 was issued during the early years of the escudo-based monetary system Portugal imposed on its African territories following the post-WWI currency reorganisation. Angola had only recently transitioned away from the réis system, and high-denomination notes like this one circulated primarily in commercial and colonial administrative transactions rather than in general retail use.

Thomas De La Rue's involvement is typical for Portuguese colonial currency of this period — Lisbon consistently contracted London printers for its overseas issues rather than using the Casa da Moeda.
