Obverse description Central vignette of Salvador Correia de Sá e Benevides (1594–1662), the Portuguese admiral and colonial administrator who reconquered Angola and São Tomé from the Dutch in 1648, rendered in fine intaglio engraving. A waterfall vignette appears alongside the portrait, set within an elaborately guillochéd frame. The bank name and denomination are inscribed in letterpress above and below the central design.
Obverse lettering BANCO DE ANGOLA QUINHENTOS ANGOLARES
(Translation: Bank of Angola, Five Hundred Angolares)
Reverse description Central oval vignette of an African fish eagle perched atop a rocky outcrop, executed in detailed intaglio engraving against a lightly shaded sky background, framed by ornate scrollwork and floral guilloche surrounds. The denomination numeral "500" appears in large figures at left and right within the intricate lace-pattern underprint, flanked by two circular rosette guilloche medallions in the lower corners. The inscription "QUINHENTOS ANGOLARES" is set in bold letterpress below the central vignette, with the printer's imprint "THOMAS DE LA RUE & COY. LTD. LONDRES, INGLATERRA" at the bottom margin.
