| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan is prominently displayed in the center of the field, featuring a stylized mosque with a mihrab flanked by two national flags, surmounted by a rising sun and a five-pointed star, all enclosed within a wreath of wheat ears. The legend DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF AFGHANISTAN arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 500 AFGHANIS is inscribed in two lines in the lower field beneath the arms. |

Afghanistan issued this piece in 1991 — three years before the tournament it commemorates — during a period of acute governmental instability following the Soviet withdrawal. The Najibullah regime, already losing territory to Mujahideen factions, was licensing its sovereign minting authority to foreign coin producers as a revenue mechanism. The actual striking almost certainly took place in a European mint, almost certainly without meaningful oversight from Kabul.
