Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, this coin belongs to a vast wave of commemoratives produced by nations across the developing world in the 1990s — most struck under contract at foreign mints and sold directly to collectors rather than circulated. Afghanistan in 1995 was in the grip of civil war following the Soviet withdrawal and the collapse of the Najibullah government; the coin-issuing authority had no functioning relationship with the population it nominally represented.
The Schön reference confirms it entered the standard catalogues, but collector demand has remained modest.
