At center, the national emblem of the Islamic State of Afghanistan is depicted in high relief, featuring a stylized mosque with two minarets flanked by crossed Afghan flags, all enclosed within a wreath of wheat sheaves surmounted by an Arabic religious inscription. The circular legend ISLAMIC STATE OF AFGHANISTAN runs along the upper periphery in Latin script, while the denomination 500 AFGHANIS is inscribed in two lines at the base of the field below the emblem. |

The reverse features a large, finely engraved frontal portrait of a Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) rendered in striking multicolor enamel, with the animal's facial markings highlighted in yellow, its nose in pink, and its open mouth revealing a red tongue, all set against a background of green foliage elements in polychrome enamel. The family name FELIDAE is inscribed in bold relief along the upper arc, with the Linnaean binomial Lynx lynx in smaller lettering immediately below, and the date 1996 centered beneath in the upper field. |

Afghanistan issued a series of wildlife-themed silver commemoratives throughout the 1990s despite being in the grip of civil war — the Rabbani government retained nominal international recognition and continued contracting European mints for collector pieces that had no domestic circulation whatsoever. The revenue went to the state treasury, such as it was.
The Eurasian lynx depicted here is native to the mountainous northeast of the country, where populations in Nuristan and Badakhshan have historically persisted in low numbers.
