Issued under the Taliban government, which seized Kabul in September 1996 — the same administration that banned television, music, and most public imagery. The quiet irony of a Taliban-era Afghan coin commemorating a French-hosted football tournament, a sport the regime actively suppressed at home, appears to have gone unaddressed by whoever authorized the contract with the foreign minting house.
