This piece belongs to a collector series launched by the National Bank of Poland in the final months of communist rule and the opening months of independence — a deliberate act of historical reclamation. Piłsudski had been effectively a forbidden figure under the People's Republic, his name scrubbed from official commemoration for four decades.
