Issued to commemorate Mohammad Hatta, the economist and independence leader who served as Indonesia's first Vice President alongside Sukarno. The 2002 date places this squarely in the post-Suharto reform period, when Bank Indonesia was actively reasserting its institutional independence — granted formally under Law No. 23 of 1999, which stripped the central bank from direct government control for the first time in decades. Commemorative gold issues of this type were struck in strictly limited quantities for collectors, never entering circulation.
