正面描述 The obverse of this Notgeld note is printed on an underlying 1 000 Mark note issued by the Stadt Trier, with an elaborate guilloche border and decorative floral cornerpieces in brown tones. A bold black letterpress surcharge reading '500 000 M' and 'Fünfhunderttausend Mark' is applied diagonally across the centre, partially obscuring the original text, which includes the issuing authority, a serial number, and date of 15 Februar 1923. The imprint 'Schaar & Dathe, Trier' appears at the lower margin, and two manuscript signatures of municipal officials are present below the text block.

背面描述 The reverse retains the original 1 000 Mark note design printed by Schaar & Dathe, with a central oval vignette surrounded by intricate guilloche lacework and ornamental floral motifs in brown and grey tones. A large bold black letterpress surcharge '500 000 M' and 'Fünfhunderttausend Mark' is applied diagonally across the centre field. The issuing text 'TRIER, 29.1.1923 – Der Oberbürgermeister' with a manuscript signature appears within the lower portion of the central vignette, and the printer's imprint 'Schaar & Dathe, Trier' is found at the foot of the note.

备注

Trier's municipal administration issued a cascade of overprinted notgeld denominations through 1923 as hyperinflation rendered existing stock obsolete almost weekly. This 500,000 Mark overprint on the 1,000 Mark base is a product of that scramble — Schaar & Dathe, the local printing firm on Simeonstrasse, applied the new value directly rather than waiting for freshly designed notes, a stopgap that was itself outdated within weeks.

The reuse of existing 1,000 Mark stock through overprinting was an economic decision as much as a logistical one — new paper and new plates cost money that devalued before the ink dried.
