Comments

Bergedorf was an independent town northeast of Hamburg until 1937, when it was formally incorporated into Greater Hamburg — one of the last German municipalities absorbed under the Nazi administrative consolidation. This note predates that by fourteen years, issued when Bergedorf still maintained its own Stadtkasse and the legal authority to emit emergency currency. The 500,000 Mark denomination places it squarely in the catastrophic inflation summer of 1923, when municipal and private issuers across Germany flooded circulation with Notgeld simply to keep wages moving.

Printed locally by Ed. Wagner's Bergedorfer Buchdruckerei, the note never traveled far from its point of issue.
