Hardenberg-Neviges was a small industrial town in the Bergisches Land region of the Rhineland, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1923, it exercised the emergency authority to print its own Notgeld when Reichsbank notes became functionally worthless faster than they could be physically issued. The half-million Mark denomination places this note squarely in the hyperinflation peak — by late 1923, even this sum barely covered a loaf of bread.
Municipal Notgeld at this level was typically printed by local commercial printers on short runs, which makes paper quality and ink consistency variable across surviving examples of the same issue.
