Elberfeld was an independent city in the Bergisches Land industrial district when it issued this note in 1923 — it would be absorbed into the newly created city of Wuppertal just two years later, in 1929, making all Elberfeld municipal emergency money a dead series by definition. The 500,000 Mark denomination places this squarely in the mid-hyperinflation window, before the zeroes multiplied into the billions and trillions of that autumn.

R. L. Friderichs & Co. was a local Elberfeld printer, not a specialist security firm, which is why the only authentication measure is a dry embossed seal — typical of the resource constraints municipalities faced when printing Notgeld at volume and speed.
