Venezuela's hyperinflationary collapse forced repeated redenominations — this note was issued under the 2018 "Sovereign Bolívar" system, itself a redenomination that lopped five zeros off the previous "Strong Bolívar." By 2020, even that currency was failing spectacularly, and a 500,000-unit note represented a few US dollars at best, often less depending on the week.
Printed domestically by the Casa de la Moneda de Venezuela rather than contracted abroad — a point of national pride that became increasingly difficult to sustain as the economic crisis deepened and imported paper supplies grew unreliable. A third redenomination followed in October 2021, converting this note's face value to a fraction of one new "Digital Bolívar."
