The Hessische Landesbank was among dozens of regional German institutions authorized to issue emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflationary collapse of 1923. By the time 500-million-mark denominations were necessary, the Reichsbank's own supply chains could not keep pace with demand; regional printers across Germany were pressed into service to fill the gap. Darmstadt-printed issues like this one were produced under genuine logistical pressure, not as commemorative or collector pieces.
The watermarked paper was a nod toward security that inflation had already rendered almost meaningless — a 500-million-mark note was worth less than a single prewar Pfennig by November 1923.
