Bergisch Gladbach's 500-million Mark note belongs to the final, almost absurd phase of Weimar hyperinflation — by the time municipal authorities were printing at this denomination in late 1923, the Reichsmark was losing value faster than notes could physically reach circulation. Cities and towns across Germany were legally authorized to issue emergency money (Notgeld) precisely because the central government could not keep pace with denominations escalating by the day.
Heiss & Co. in Köln-Lindenthal were a regional commercial printer, not a specialist banknote house. The technical limitations show.
