Schleswig-Holstein's provincial treasury — the Landeshauptkasse in Kiel — was among the regional and municipal authorities forced to issue their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet demand. This 500-million mark note dates from the peak chaos of that autumn, when denominations that would have seemed absurd in January were already obsolete by October.
Hartung & Co. in Hamburg handled a considerable volume of Notgeld printing during this period, working under extreme turnaround pressure. Notes of this type were often issued and demonetized within weeks.
