Comments

One of hundreds of Notgeld denominations issued at the municipal and district level during the hyperinflation peak of autumn 1923, when the Reichsbank's own supply of emergency currency simply could not keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time 500-million-mark notes were being printed regionally, that sum would buy roughly a loaf of bread — briefly. The Rhenania-Druckerei in Bonn was a logical local choice; commissioning a printer outside the district would have added days the economy could not afford.

The watermarked paper is worth noting — most Notgeld of this period dispensed with security features entirely as an irrelevance. Someone, somewhere in the district administration, still thought counterfeiting a risk worth guarding against.
