Leutkirch's Oberamtssparkasse was one of hundreds of German district savings institutions forced into emergency currency production during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark's collapse outpaced Berlin's ability to supply adequate denominations. By the time half-trillion Mark notes became necessary — a figure that would have been genuinely incomprehensible eighteen months earlier — local printers were handling the work, which accounts for the relatively crude production quality typical of late-stage Notgeld at this denomination level.
The Württemberg Oberämter (district offices) had administrative responsibility for their Sparkassen, making the Amtskörperschaft the legally correct issuing body even when the notes were physically produced and distributed through the savings bank counter.
