Reverse description A finely modelled, high-relief right-facing bust portrait of King Vladislaus IV (Władysław IV Waza) dominates the reverse field, rendered in the manner of a Baroque royal effigy. The king is depicted wearing a broad-brimmed hat adorned with a jewelled brooch, elaborate curled hair falling to his shoulders, and richly decorated armour with an ornate lace collar. The legend 'VLADISLAUS IV.' arcs along the upper periphery above the portrait. The engraver's signature 'I · I · REICHEL · F ·' appears in small incuse lettering at the lower field beneath the bust. The design closely replicates a historical medallic portrait, conveying regal dignity and martial authority.

Additional information

Władysław IV Vasa, for whom this issue is named, ruled Poland-Lithuania from 1632 to 1648 and spent much of his reign attempting to drag the Commonwealth into a grand anti-Ottoman crusade that the Sejm repeatedly refused to fund. His frustrated militarism and the nobility's stranglehold on the treasury were direct precursors to the catastrophic wars that would hollow out the Commonwealth within a decade of his death.
