Trial strikes from the Polish State Mint in this period were produced as internal proofs of concept — submitted for approval before a full issue was authorized, and often surviving in tiny quantities distributed among mint officials and a handful of privileged collectors. Władysław I Herman ruled Poland from 1079 to 1102, a reign defined largely by his subservience to the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV and his marginalization of the Polish nobility, making him an unusual choice for numismatic commemoration among the otherwise heroic cast of the PRL-era ruler series.
The ParM and Fischer references confirming this as the "b" variety suggest at least two distinct trial configurations exist for this type.
