The king is depicted wearing elaborate armour with a scale-pattern breastplate and a decorative chain, with a moustache and beard characteristic of his known portraits. The legend '300 LAT ODSIECZY WIEDEŃSKIEJ' curves along the upper rim, commemorating the 300th anniversary of the Relief of Vienna. Jan III Sobieski ruled Poland from 1674 until his death in 1696, and is remembered above all for commanding the relief force at the Battle of Vienna in 1683 — the year this coin commemorates in its tercentenary. The Communist-era Polish mint produced trial strikes in alternative metals as a matter of routine procurement testing, which is why this nickel piece exists alongside the issued cupro-nickel type rather than as a standalone experiment.
The ParM and Fischer references both catalog it as a pattern, though surviving population is difficult to establish with precision.
