Jan III Sobieski is best remembered for commanding the relief force at the Battle of Vienna in 1683 — the largest cavalry charge in recorded history — which broke the Ottoman siege and effectively ended Turkish expansion into central Europe. The 1983 issue marks the 300th anniversary of that battle. Trial strikes of this type were produced in copper-nickel as proofs of concept before the final circulation alloy was confirmed, and they were never released through normal banking channels.
